Preschool on Wheels

ACF’s Preschool on Wheels program

The Preschool on Wheels Program is a signature project of Aspen Community Foundation’s Cradle to Career Initiative. In partnership with Garfield School District Re-2, Gus the Bus and the Sunshine Bus are school buses transformed into state-of-the-art preschool classrooms, and they are the first mobile preschools to be licensed by the State of Colorado.

The buses serve 120 children a year in the communities of Rifle, Silt and New Castle, who would not otherwise have access to quality preschool.

Early childhood education provides the foundation for a child’s future academic success. Research supports that a quality preschool experience is one of the most effective ways to improve the educational and life outcomes for young children.

Unfortunately, economically disadvantaged children often are not able to take part in a preschool program. In many areas, there are simply not enough preschools to serve all the children and tuition costs prevent many low-income families from enrolling their children in preschool without some financial subsidy. Also, parents often cannot get their children to a preschool location because they may not have a vehicle or public transportation options. These are the children and families served by the Preschool on Wheels program.

Children learn to make sense of the world when given many opportunities to engage in varied, rich experiences and interactions, which help them become self-confident, self-disciplined and self-directed lifelong learners. The Preschool on Wheels Program empowers children physically, emotionally and mentally, while encouraging children to express themselves through creativity and social interactions. Our main goal is to prepare our students for the next phase in their lives and strengthen each child’s social emotional, cognitive, language and literacy skills.

Every dollar invested in early childhood education returns $4 to $9 to the public as a result of reduced special education, welfare, and crime costs, and increased tax revenues from participants later in life.

“Preschool on Wheels has been an important step in our kids’ education.  We have had four kids be a part of either Gus the Bus or the Sunshine Bus and our kids have enjoyed their time at school.  The care and attention the teachers gave my kids helped them ease into the first school experience they received.  In the home my kids frequently reference things that they discussed in school and often talk about their teachers and friends on the bus.  One of the perks in being a part of the program is that parents are provided with a wealth of quality resources by local experts, aimed at making them a better parent and “teacher” in the home.”
