Preschool on Wheels

The Preschool on Wheels program is a signature project of Aspen Community Foundation’s Cradle to Career Initiative. In partnership with Garfield School District Re-2, Gus the Bus and the Sunshine Bus are school buses transformed into state-of-the-art preschool classrooms. Preschool on Wheels was the first mobile preschool to be licensed by the State of Colorado.
The purpose of the Preschool on Wheels program is to provide an accessible and affordable high-quality preschool experience for children ages 3-5 that assures all children are ready for kindergarten. The mobile classrooms are developmentally appropriate, bilingual learning environments with accredited early childhood educators. Preschool on Wheels values a multi-generational approach by providing outreach, education, home visits, and referrals to parents and caregivers.

More than 600 children have benefited from the program since it began in 2012, and have entered kindergarten ready to learn and on equal footing with peers who attended traditional preschool programs.

In 2016-17 Preschool on Wheels participants showed marked increases in literacy, social-emotional, and language development, including a 37% increase in demonstrating knowledge of the alphabet, a 12% increase in demonstrating ability to regulate personal emotions and behaviors, a 16% increase in demonstrating ability to use language to express thoughts and needs, and a 29% increase in demonstrating emergent writing skills.
Children learn to make sense of the world when given many opportunities to engage in varied, rich experiences and interactions which help them become self-confident, self-disciplined, and self-directed lifelong learners. The goal of the Preschool on Wheels program is to provide enriching experiences for parents and their young children.
• All children are natural learners, but they learn best when they have many opportunities to make choices and to explore them to the deepest levels.
• All children learn through increasingly complex interactions with people and varied materials. They learn first through their senses, by feeling, touching, tasting, and smelling.

• All learning is interrelated; and children need many experiences to integrate their knowledge.
• All children profit from continuity with people, places and things -- the same teachers, same children, and same place to meet in a well-equipped classroom. Friendships help children to understand the world.
• Parents are the most important people in children’s lives and must be actively engaged with them. Collaboration between parents and the teachers is crucial.
• The Preschool on Wheels program is a supplement to, not a substitute for, what each family provides for their children at home.
